How the engagement rate is calculated
Engagement rate is the single most honest metric on Instagram. Follower counts can be inflated or stale; engagement shows how many of those followers actually react. The formula the industry (and this calculator) uses is simple: (average likes + average comments per post) ÷ followers × 100. We sample the account's most recent posts, average the likes and comments, and divide by the current follower count.
What counts as a good rate?
- Under 1% — low. Typical for accounts with bought-then-abandoned audiences or reach problems.
- 1–3% — average. Where most established accounts sit.
- 3–6% — good. An active, healthy audience that the algorithm rewards with more reach.
- Over 6% — excellent. Usually smaller or niche accounts with genuinely loyal followings.
Keep in mind that rate shrinks as accounts grow — a 500K account at 2% is often healthier than a 2K account at 8%. Brands checking influencers should always compare rates between accounts of similar size.
How to improve a low engagement rate
Post consistently, hook viewers in the first line, lean into Reels (Instagram's highest-reach format), reply to comments fast, and use targeted hashtags rather than generic ones. And because the algorithm feeds on early momentum, many creators pair fresh posts with a boost of likes or views to trigger wider distribution — that early signal is exactly what our growth packages deliver.
